RSG2 (Advanced)

RSG2 is the first level in our development program.

Our current development levels, and the age group to which they normally apply, are as follows:

The first emphasis of the RSG2 progression is to build a strong technical foundation securing each of the three primary fundamental skill groups. These skill groups include:

  • Position Specific Movement

  • Basic Positioning

  • Initial Save Assets

Strength in these critical areas will ensure expedited growth due to the strength of the fundamental base. On-ice sessions will have a strong focus on a goalie’s movement game due to its importance for this skill group. Strong movement leads to greater positional efficiency, which in turn leads to more controlled and consistent save responses. A further impact of this fundamental focus is the increase in confidence that the younger or beginner-level goaltender receives from growth in these areas. While movement is the focus, our goaltenders will build strong basic positioning skills and the ability to execute key save moves.

After establishing a strong technical foundation in these areas, the emphasis of RSG2 shifts to refine these technical skills while taking the participant's positional and post-save game to a higher standard. It is in these areas that goaltender’s often find their greatest technical gains. Improving both shot preparation and post-save efficiency leads directly to greater performance consistency. During ice sessions, athletes will engage in a program focusing on technical refinement and tactical training.

Participants will begin to gain greater control of save executions, recovery and position-specific movements that drive their positional efficiency. Sessions will concentrate on goaltender mobility (pre-save and post-save) and establishing stronger & more consistent position with an emphasis on center-net play. Positioning while down will be introduced in this level to begin the process of driving a goalie’s positional recovery skills forward.

In this part of the development level, goaltenders will be introduced to a more sophisticated approach to their development, not only through the technical work but also as they assess both sides of the puck. An introduction into tactical play will be delivered...a 101 course for game situations...as the ability to read the play effectively allows the goalie to dictate the flow of attack.

The RSG2 program is designed to take lay down a strong technical base in our newer goaltenders and then begin to introduce more advanced teachings in the areas of:

  • Shot preparation

  • Puck control/Post-save response

  • Tactical responses

  • Transitional skills

RSG2 is intended for goaltenders in the following categories:

  • Are Novice or Atom age (typically 3 years or less experience as a full-time goaltender);

  • Are Peewee age but have never attended RSG or other specialized goaltending programs; or,

  • Are on the bubble between RSG2 and RSG3 but have never attended RSG or other specialized

Are on the bubble between RSG2 and RSG3 but have never attended RSG or other specialized goaltending programs, or are still mastering some of the fundamental skill groups; these athletes still want to be very well schooled in strong technical skills but are better suited for RSG2 than the high performance level.

The RSG2 curriculum is available as a week long summer camp as well as a 24-week weekly winter program; in addition, we often offer this curriculum in a compressed 6 or 8-week weekly spring program (if demand exists).
